I recently discovered a way to combine three of my children’s favorite things: snow, arts and crafts, and squirt bottles. If your kids are anything like mine, this activity is sure to be a hit!
As the snow begins to melt and outdoor play options become more limited, keeping kids entertained can be a challenge. A few days ago, my husband created a mini sledding hill in our front yard—a lifesaver when the three older kids are itching to be outside while the baby isn’t and there’s only one of me to go around. It gave them a chance to enjoy sledding without us needing to venture far or me having to supervise every moment. The only downside? The endless cycle of getting kids in and out of their snow gear, which is easily my least favorite part of snow days!
But back to the fun part—this snow day craft idea. All you need are a few squirt bottles https://amzn.to/426fQzJ, water, and food coloring, https://amzn.to/3PwE3YD support your little Picassos’ imaginations. For reasons I can’t quite figure out, my kids are obsessed with squirt bottles. Maybe it’s the satisfaction of spraying or the novelty of controlling the stream, but either way, they love them. And as a bonus, using squirt bottles helps develop their fine motor skills. Win-win!
I filled the bottles with colored water, handed them over, and gave them just one instruction: only spray the snow. (This was my attempt to avoid a food-coloring mess, and to my surprise, it worked!) The girls were thrilled. They spent hours creating colorful snow art, decorating their sledding hill, practicing writing their names, and letting their imaginations run wild.
The true test of success? When I called them inside to eat, their first question was, “When can we do that again?” That’s how I knew we’d found a snow day winner.
So, when your next snow day rolls around—or if you want to recreate this indoors with shaved ice—give it a try! It’s a simple, budget-friendly, and creative way to keep kids engaged and entertained. I’d love to hear about your children’s experiences if you try it out.
Until next time, happy creating!
